- Findings: On January 20th, 1989 this aircraft crashed on approach to NAS Cubi Point, PI. During an annual NATOPS check flight, the crew was in EFCS mode and stalled with insufficient altitude and airspeed to recover.
Witnesses stated aircraft appeared slow, power was applied, and nose pitched up, aircraft stalled, fell off on the starboard wing and impacted the water near vertically then inverted approximately 500 yards from the approach end of runway 07 in over 100'of water.
Cause of mishap was determined to be pilot error in which did not anticipate and/or failed to compensate for the reduced longitudinal control that results when power is applied during EFCS mode.
Crew of 2 fatal.
