- Findings: Aboard USS Nimitz, A 20mm cannon on a A-7 Corsair accidentally fires during maintenance. The A-7 was on the '1-Row' and its rounds struck a fully fueled KA-6 immediately parked in front of it in the 'throat'. The fire consumed the forward halves of 6 A-7's and all of the KA-6. NG-707 was parked immediately forward of the KA-6 and its rudder and tail were burned just enough for it to be immediately unrepairable, was craned off the Nimitz upon return from WESTPAC at Alameda, where it was repaired by the NADEP there.
Naval Safety Center could not find mishap report.
